It was about time that I sorted out a new website!
I have been out of racing action for some time, actually since my withdrawal from Ironman Western Australia. My initial back injury resulted in a domino effect of injuries... But honestly I know that my body breaking down was in fact building over a period of time. I have been racing a long time and over the years all the training miles, and the scar tissue from old niggles tend to rear their ugly head if you don't keep on top of the maintenance. In August last year we relocated to Brisbane from Melbourne, and to be honest I had been a little slack on my body maintenance. I had lost my team of therapists that I relied on to keep me in one piece and now living in different state I had to find all those people again. It is only just recently that I have managed to get on top my injury. My sciatic nerve has been under a lot of pressure and the physio's believe that the chronic tightness in my glutes has been impinging on the nerve. This has resulted in poor function of the muscles and continued calf strains and tears for the past 5 months. A frustrating tearful time...I tell you!
I decided in May that it wasn't going to fix without rest, and some thorough treatment. The band-aid treatment of 'treat and continue to train' I had been doing wasn't going to cut it! Also not being able to get past 15 minutes of running was also a serious problem. So reluctantly I cancelled my race plans for Port Mac 70.3 and Challenge Cairns and took a forced break. Initially I took 2 weeks off completely and since then I have still kept the body going with easy rides and the occasional swim. Also finding a team that can treat me and keep my body moving was the objective during this time.
For those who know me well, they know that I believe that there is a little more going on in the universe than just us humans running around in meatsuits! I was aware that I had been trying to control too much lately, I had been trying to control the outcome of events, trying to control my injury and I was caught in an unhappy world of poor me I have to work so much and my injury has just ruined 6 months racing. I didn't seem to be noticing the signs, the words spoken that would lead me to solving my injury problem. So I got back to clearing my mind, I started walking home from work since I could not run and I used the time to mediate upon the desired outcome and accepted that I would be given signs and insights on how to heal my injury and improve my life.
My Chiropractor, Sean Healey who I met when I first relocated to Brisbane had been do an amazing job on the skeletal side of things, he also practices Kinesiology and helped me clear some limiting beliefs that I had been holding for some time. But I also needed some work done on my muscles, my Mum kept mentioning Al (a number of times I might add). Allan Davidson is a massage guru, I must say! I first started seeing Al when I was 16 on the Gold Coast but I wasn't sure if he was still massaging. Given that I had now had reminder about Al from both my Mum and Dad, I felt I really should take notice! So I managed to track down his details and secure a regular spot back with Al! Nothing has changed with Al, he is still the same after all these years.....apparently I have grown according to him! He has also helped get some elasticity back in those muscles! My second instance of taking notice of signs was meeting a work colleague who happened to also compete in Ironman triathlon. He mentioned a physio that he went to who practiced acupuncture. I regularly received acupuncture in Melbourne, so I was immediately interested. However, like the Al instance I didn't follow up on it straight away. After bumping into my work colleague a few times and he asking if I had been to see his physio yet?! I realised straight away that I had ignored the intuitive nudges and signs once again. So now it was practically screaming in my face, make an appointment! Well I'm happy to report that my first session with Terry was great! He managed to needle the area releasing the nerve significantly on my first visit! When it released my hamstring shook and tingled the whole way into my foot and toes! He also took the time to ensure that all the affected areas were worked on and released. I knew this time I had found another person for my maintenance team :-)
So now I'm on the road back. The body is functioning much better however, I still have much further to go. I have also recently joined my local gym where they hold Yoga and Body Balance classes which will also help keep my body strong and flexible. Would you believe this was also something that I had been feeling intuitively and receiving signs for some time! So happy to report I have acted on this one too :-)
It still amazes me that when stop trying so hard, life tends to flow. We just have to take more notice of the signs we receive, and how we have everything that we need. Everyday opportunities and new experiences come our way, it's about taking notice and acting on them.
